Project Description

Students will explore the current night sky, determining their orientation with the Big Dipper and Polaris, then exploring the seasonal constellations with a star map they can take home to use under the real sky. In this participatory program, the students choose and identify a few constellations, then they are given a guided tour of some of the celestial objects that highlight the season. They will also be shown the three dimensional nature of the constellations and follow the motions of the stars through the night. Optionally, the program can briefly explore celestial coordinate systems, the Zodiac, or the proper motion of stars through time.
