BRIDGES
THE FIRST BRIDGE IN COMSTOCK
The first bridge in Comstock Township was called the "Lower" Bridge. The Lower Bridge was built over the Kalamazoo River. It was built on July 4th 1834 in Galesburg.
HOW THEY BUILT IT
When the men built the Lower Bridge, some people worked on cutting and trimming the trees. Others jumped in the river, caught logs, and put them together. The logs were notched at the end and lifted into place. When men worked on a bridge like this, it was called a "bridge building bee".
ANOTHER INTERESTING BRIDGE
Another interesting bridge is the Old Iron Bridge. It was made of iron, and was made in 1909. It was on River Street and was built over the Kalamazoo River. Since it was built over the Kalamazoo River, it made a great diving board for swimmers. It had floors made of planks, and could fit two vehicles. The bridge was torn down and replaced in 1939.
