What's In a Name?
The history behind street and lake names in Comstock is not well known. Why is Sprinkle Road named Sprinkle Road? What about Campbell Lake? Was something named after a governor, animal, or Indian? If you want to know, look here!
Street names hide things like governor names in them. Did you ever hear of the street Cass? Do you know about the street Comstock Ave.? Cass St. was named after Michigan Territory governor Louis Cass. Barry St. was named after governor John S. Barry. Comstock Ave. was named after Horace Comstock, an early settler here. Blair St. was named after governor Austin Blair. Alger St. was named after governor Russell A. Alger. The street named Pingree was named after governor Hazen S. Pingree. Ferris St. was named after governor Woodbridge N. Ferris. The street named Sleeper was named after governor Albert E. Sleeper.
Comstock's lakes have history hidden in them. Lake Campbell was named after a family that owned a lot of property there. Morrow Lake was named after a person that engineered the building of the dam on the Kalamazoo River in the 1930's, Mr. Bryce E. Morrow. Lyons and Schoonover Lakes were named after the original or local landowners.
