Old Schoolhouses
Schools have changed a lot in 100 years! Our school has about 20 classrooms with about 20-25 students in each room. Before the 1950s many students went to one room schoolhouses, but in the 1950s these schools started disappearing fast! Here is some information about two one room schoolhouses in Comstock Township.
Chenery School The building that now houses Sherry's Hair Perfections was formally known as Chenery School, and even before that it was known as the Jickling School. The building is located at the corner of H Ave. and 26th Street. The first time the building was shown on a plat map was in the year 1855 when it was known as the Jickling School. The first time it was called the Chenery School on a plat map was in the year 1890. Frank Oliver Chenery, who the school was named after, served on the school board for 55 years. The schoolhouse was located on his farm. In the year 1946 the three upper grades were closed. In the year 1953 the school was still on the plat map, so that meant they must have taught the lower grades for a couple more years. The school was not on the 1958 plat map, so the school must have closed between the years 1953 and 1958. |
Galesburg Pavilion Galesburg Pavilion is used for a storage unit. It is located on Kilgore Rd. and 33rd Street. When it was a schoolhouse from 1868-1944 it was called Galesburg Pavilion or District#1. It went from kindergarten to eighth grade. |
One-room schoolhouses started disappearing because they decided to move the students into larger school districts. The result of many children being moved into the larger schools was many of the smaller schools started disappearing very fast!
