Comstock Cemeteries

Many people wonder just how many cemeteries there are in Comstock. The answer is, simply, seven. What are their names? Comstock Cemetery, Fords Hill Cemetery, Galesburg Old Cemetery, Maple Grove Cemetery, Shafter Burying Ground, Wheaton Burying Ground, and Country Rest Home Cemetery. The two best known are Maple Grove Cemetery and Comstock Cemetery.

Another fact people wonder about is what is the oldest cemetery in Comstock? Does Comstock ring a bell? Well, Comstock happens to be the oldest cemetery in the township. Comstock Cemetery is located behind the Adult Ed. Building. What's the oldest monument? The oldest monument is in Comstock Cemetery. The name is ABI wife of LELAND LANE, died September 9, 1839.

Do you know if there were marked or unmarked graves a hundred and more years ago at Comstock Cemetery? I do. There were unmarked graves. Workers found holes in the ground which were probably graves. Why weren't there coffins? Well, the old coffins were made of wood and rapidly rotted.

I have seen Comstock Cemetery many times. Each time I remember my grandfather. He died in1996. It makes me feel better to see that other people have experienced a loss of someone they loved.

I used the Comstock Bicentennial to get most of my information. I also used a map of Comstock to get the location of Comstock Cemetery.
