Do you want to learn about the history of the Administration and Community Learning Center? It is on 26th street near the railroad crossing at East Michigan. Many different buildings used to be in the place where it stands now. It will be interesting to learn the history from the year 1833- 1992. The picture above shows what the building looks like now. In 1833, Horace Comstock donated land on which to build the Comstock Village School. He paid for the building, and in return he asked to have the township named after him. Miss Betsy Percival was the first teacher in the school. The 12 x 14 x 8 building was used for a church also. In 1898 the school building that Comstock donated burned down. Before the fire the school had the first official fire drill which helped the 70 pupils escape from the building. After the fire they built another school which was a one-story building with two rooms. Kids could go to school until 8th or 9th grade. If they wanted to continue, they had to go to Kalamazoo or Galesburg. In 1907, it was remodeled into a two-story building with a full 12 grades It had a large hall with an office and a hot air furnace. The district grew. In 1921 the building was reconstructed and additions were made in 1925, 1929, 1936,and 1941. The final remodeling was in 1972. . In 1936 a Public Works Administration project was announced for $49,000 for the grade school to include an auditorium, a gymnasium, and a heating plant. This building was used for many different things. It is now used for adult education classes during the week. It is used for Comstock Youth Basketball games, volleyball practice, and sports tryouts on the weekends. |
